A plethora of patients present with the complaint of dry mouth, also known as xerostomia. From autoimmune conditions to pharmacologic therapies, a whole host of etiologies exist for this uncomfortable condition, resulting in an increased risk for dental caries. As preventive care specialists, hygienists must be knowledgeable about xerostomia etiologies and preventive strategies, to address increased caries risk. This course will discuss xerostomia as a subjective patient complaint, its various causes, how it affects the oral cavity to increase caries risk and strategies for both professional and at-home prevention.
